Mercedes
Courland grew up on Long Island in a European family deeply
immersed in the world of art and architecture.
Mercedes’ father, Egil P. Hermanovski, and his three brothers were all
artists and architects in their native country of Latvia. Her grandfather,
Theodore, was involved in the “International” style, and architectural
movement developed in Europe in the 1920 – 1930s. They are listed
in the Who’s Who in America.
Mercedes is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York. She
also studied in Paris and was designing interiors for Blum & Nerzig Architects
by age of 22. By the age of 25 she had her own design firm.
While in Paris, and on many subsequent trips to Europe, she studied and assimilated
all the French details from many styles, Louis XIV to Art Nouveau. With
her strong sense of color she was offered a position to teach at NYIT in Old
Westbury. She taught the principals of color to third year architecture
students. The refined and sophisticated palettes she develops are the result
of many years of travel, studying and hard work.
Mercedes has worked with exclusive clientele in many parts of the country. Her
work has been published in many magazines, including House, Newsday Sunday
Magazine, and @Home Magazine. She has also participated in
seven showcases throughout the metropolitan area.
